This was the 20th consecutive year that we have celebrated the Southern PCB Golf Day. The event has grown considerably from its golfing roots and is now a recognised social and networking event for PCB colleagues and friends.
We had 30 golfers taking part this year. Our day started with bacon rolls and snack lunch in the club bar with golf commencing at 12.30.
It was a gloriously sunny day. However, the wet summer had caused considerable damage to some of the greens that had been waterlogged for long periods through June and July. The hotel partly made up for the poor playing conditions by donating a raffle prize of a 4 ball at Wentworth which was won in the evening by David Jones.
We had 41 guests for our celebration dinner. We are again so grateful that Lloyd Doyle sponsored the main prizes. Roy Lloyd was not able to be with us so Peter Coakley presented the prizes on his behalf.
Newcomer Jake Kelly won “The Bernard Coles Cup” for the highest individual score with 35 points. This cup was presented by Maurice Hubert. This is an annual trophy and we remember Bernard for his contribution to the PCB industry and the many enjoyable golf days he spent with us.
The Southern PCB Morton Trophy pairs competition was won by Don Glenister and Graham Thompson with 42 points. Runners up were Nigel West and David Fitzgerald on 41 points. The Longest Drive competition was won by Angus Brunton. The nearest the pin prizes were won by Stuart Hayton and Brian Reid.
Schloetter are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year and they sponsored a nearest the pin feature prize at the 18th hole. This was won by Jake kelly and Paul Griffiths presented Jake with a bottle of champagne and a crystal glass champagne cooler.
After the prize giving we were again superbly entertained by Bill Wilkie with his observations and jokes. I am so grateful to Bill that he travels so far to be with us.
We had some marvellous gifts for our prize draw. Extra prizes were donated by Don Glenister, Mike Partridge, Norman Fergusson, Nigel west and Kelvin Leigh.
My special thanks go to our sponsors which we all recognise make this day possible. They are listed on the menu below and we heartily toasted them at our celebration dinner.
